What you should know about medicine

Whenever my five years old son falls sick, he is prescribed some medicine syrup. The doctor says, Make sure he takes his medicine on time and gulps down the entire dose. I am pretty OK with that, since i know that the medicine is for his benefit. But my little (not so little!!) bundle of joy bombards so many questions: what is a medicine, why should i take, what it contains which would make me fit, why should i take only one spoon or two or even why the medicine is to be taken three times a day and how the doctor knows that i would get fit in 1,3 or say 5 days. Most of the mothers would agree with me. This is the reason why i decided to pen down my thoughts and educate all about what is medicine all about?

To simply put, medicine is something which would make us feel better when we are sick or they are taken to prevent us from falling sick. Medicines are of various types:

  • Antibiotics are advised when we want to flush out harmful bacteria or virus from the body which attack the immune system
  • Pain relievers: as the name suggest, they help to get rid of the pain
  • Antihistamines: which prevents us from getting allergy
  • Cream and ointments: which helps in fast healing and give a soothing effect in the affected area
  • Some medicines like calcium and vitamin tablets are taken even without prescription
medicines could be in the form of tablets, powder or syrup. Why the doctor advise us to take the medicine on time and in prescribed quantity is to ensure that the medication has the desired effect.
The dosage is prescribed as per the age. it also depends on the severity of your problem.

Quench the thirst of knowledge of your little one by answering all the queries. Also educate them that they should not touch any medicine or take it on their own. keep the medicines away from the reach of the children. tell them that consuming medicine without prescription could be life threatening

I hope mothers would find this write up of some use!!
keep enjoying motherhood and stay blessed!!
